What is a DaTscan (Dopamine Transporter Scan)?
A DaTscan is a specialized nuclear medicine imaging test used to evaluate dopamine activity in the brain. It helps doctors diagnose Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders by showing how dopamine is being transported in the brain.
The procedure involves using a small amount of radioactive tracer and using SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) camera to capture detailed images.
Common uses: Distinguishing Parkinson's disease from similar conditions such as essential tremor or other forms of parkinsonism is possible with DaTscan, which visualizes dopamine transporter activity in the brain to help identify neurodegenerative causes of tremor.
What is a PET/CT Scan?
A PET/CT scan combines two types of imaging in one procedure:
-
PET (Positron Emission Tomography) shows how your organs and tissues are functioning.
-
CT (Computed Tomography) provides detailed images of your body's structure.
Together, these scans help detect abnormalities and pinpoint their exact location in the body. A small amount of radioactive tracer is used to highlight areas of high metabolic activity, which may indicate disease.
Common Uses: Cancer detection, monitoring treatment, evaluating heart disease, and diagnosing brain disorders.
